Secret Animal Sketches

A creative listening and speaking worksheet for beginner English learners. Children draw a secret animal picture, describe it to a partner and compare the resulting drawings. This information-gap activity gives familiar animal vocabulary and position phrases a clear communicative purpose. Includes a separate English teacher guide with modelling suggestions and supported alternatives.

Target Vocabulary: cat, frog, desk; on, under.

Target Language: “The cat’s on the desk.” “The cat’s under the desk.” “The frog’s on the desk.” “The frog’s under the desk.”

Activity:

  • Choose a cat or a frog using the reference pictures.
  • Draw it on or under the desk in the left-hand scene, keeping the picture hidden from your partner.
  • Describe your picture while your partner listens and draws in the right-hand scene on their own sheet.
  • Swap roles, then reveal both pages.
  • Compare each original picture with the partner’s drawing.

Learning Goal: To communicate an animal’s identity and position clearly, and interpret a partner’s spoken description through drawing.

Teacher’s Insight: Check whether the animal and position match, rather than judging artistic detail. Colours and size do not need to match. Demonstrate the two drawing areas orally; children do not need to read the labels or write words.
