Food Question Cards

A supported partner-speaking activity for Starter-level English learners. Three food cards and two response cards help children ask about preferences, answer and exchange roles. The visual prompts support short conversations without reading or writing. Includes a separate teacher page with modelling guidance and a prompt bank.

Target Vocabulary: milk, chocolate, pears

Target Language: Do you like…? / Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

Activity

  • The teacher cuts out the five cards along the dashed outlines.
  • Review the food pictures and model both response symbols.
  • One child chooses a food card and asks a question, such as “Do you like milk?”
  • The partner points to a response card and gives the matching answer.
  • Swap roles and choose another food.

Learning Goal: Participate in a short, supported question-and-answer exchange about food preferences.

Teacher’s Insight: Children may pass if unsure or answer for an imaginary character. Check whether their spoken answer matches the response symbol; personal preferences have no correct answer.
